With a pervasive interest in portraiture, my practice has evolved from traditional modes of representation to an exploration of expanded portraiture and lateral modes of representation. Your Treasure Is Trash are a series of collaged paintings created from an archive of found materials made meaningful by its process and collaboration. The found materials become a substitute for the subjects, exposing a truth about them which they literally tried to throw away. My role as an artist working in expanded portraiture here is to create meaningful representations that work against our inherent need to be ‘control freaks’ of our image. It is arguably in the parts of us we hide, our flaws and vulnerabilities, which in this work is represented by literal trash, that you can truly see others for who they are.
